the oldest town of the country is colonia del sacramento, a harbour founded by portugal in 1680, and for about a century the center of what later became uruguay. the historic section of colonia, a world heritage site, is full of traditional houses and walls, often built with rough stones and bricks, and the numerous images and names painted on tiles are a distinctive feature of this town.
